For the animated documentary, we had several ideas and potential people for interviews. In the end, Fernanda and Giulio interviewed Giulio's co-worker, Josh, on coming out about his sexuality. When coming up with the questions to be asked at the interview, we thought the focus would be family. When writing the transcripts, we realised the most powerful moment of the story was during education. Giulio edited the audio, since he was present at the interview, while Fernanda and I worked on visuals for the documentary. After listening to the first audio pass, I focused on the of scratching to symbolise someone uncomfortable in their own skin, and possibly even self harming, which was cut from the audio. We then worked on the first animation. We each took a section of the audio and proceeded to put together an animatic. This resulted is disjointed themes and visuals. Below is my section of the animatic. The other is the full version including the shots from the others.
After receiving feedback, we learnt we needed more coherency between the whole animation, so that it didn't appear as three separate animations put together. I redid my section to try and make it more clear, which opened up the pathway for a fully consistent metaphor in the animatic relating to weight, identity, and most importantly anxiety, represented by a parasitic shadow. In order to speed up the animatic process, and provide reference, we filmed the remainder of the animation, which I directed. The resulting feedback was improved, but the acting was too stiff and needed more personality. We refilmed every shot, with more people involved to get several versions and takes. I then edited it all into the new animatic below. During the animatic stage, I worked on the final character design, looking at an older character. The others were going for a much younger character, which I felt was out of place in the context and themes of the animation. In the end, we went with my character design, but became void when we used the Jack Body Mechanic Rig to speed up production. I also put together the Global Shot List, and worked on Shot 50, 60 and 70. Below is after shapes and pictures had been added. Unfortunately after rendering I noticed a fault with the boxes for the isolation scene, however it adds a nice aesthetic to the scene, and emphasises prison cell bars more. Overall, I'm proud of what the group achieved after hitting several speedbumps along the way. If we had more time, we would have liked to work more on finessing several textures passes, but a majority of the animation was a high quality, which was a main goal.
